Thank You for your support!

FolkScene was established in February 2001, as a not-for-profit corporation doing business in the State of California. Presently, we have been granted a 501(C3) status from the Internal Revenue Service. What this means is that all sponsorships and donations and profits from purchases that are made by you directly to FolkScene become tax deductible. Pretty cool, huh?

Why did we choose to develop FolkScene.com as a not-for-profit entity? For over thirty years Roz and Howard Larman presented FolkScene on the Pacifica radio station, KPFK, in Southern California. Fundraising for financial support allowed the Larmans to create and maintain a creative force, offering up-and-coming and/or otherwise unknown artists the opportunity to gain exposure to a market that is otherwise governed by advertising dollars. The decision to develop FolkScene as a not-for-profit company and continue to expand the show was made in support of, and at the request of, our audience. FolkScene and the Larmans have a solid history and integrity in raising funds for not-for-profit use. With the opportunity that the Internet provides — the potential for a global audience — the decision has been made to take the radio program onto the Internet, where we’ll continue to deliver the highest quality audio sound, programming, and music information that can be produced.

By maintaining a not-for-profit status, FolkScene is able to operate as a creative force, offering a medium for artistic expression rather than merely playing music provided by whichever record companies have paid for advertising each week. FolkScene is free to represent its community honestly and without bias, and it is this freedom that has allowed FolkScene to reach a level of integrity and influence that a for-profit entity never could attain. Unlike commercial radio programs, FolkScene educates and exposes the general public to music from a unique cultural vantage point, and this way of participating in the music world has allowed FolkScene to earn credibility and respect not only from the audience, but also from artists, record companies, and promoters.

But we need your assistance. To date, the incarnation of FolkScene.com has been developed and maintained through the generosity of a few devoted people, but we are looking to provide far more now to our community than we ever have before. This includes the development of an international music listing section that will allow people from all over the world to post information regarding their music events, a broad and active review section with concert and CD reviews from all over the world, the production of actual, real-world community concerts (occurring right now in the Los Angeles area only), and many other features that will take time and money to construct. At this time, you can purchase any of the FolkScene CDs or make your donation right here on our site or you can snail-mail your purchase requests or donations directly to:
