Intro:  The feature on this program is our once a month special from the FolkScene Archives. This month feature includes Jean Ritchie recorded April 13, 1975 plus Mason William. Rick Cunha. Jeff Gilkinson. & Bill Cunningham recorded November 16, 1975.

Jean  Ritchie is an American folk music singer, songwriter, and Appalachian dulcimer player Jean  Ritchie was born in Viper, Kentucky, in the Cumberland Mountains.She eventually moved to  New York  where she met Oscar BrandLead Belly, and Pete Seeger, and started singing her family songs again.. Jean began writing songs, and recorded several albums of the songs she heard as a child, and the ones she later wrote.  One of most recognized songs is “The L & N Don’t Stop Here Anymore”.

Mason Williams emerged in the late 1960’s as a strong force in television and music circles. He is most widely known as composer and recording artist of mega hit Classical Gas, which won three Grammy Awards for: “Best Instrumental Composition”, “Best Instrumental Performance”, and “Best Instrumental Orchestra Arrangement

Raised in southern California, guitarist/vocalist Rick Cunha was a founding member of Hearts And Flowers, a pivotal mid-60s country/folk trio.  Cunha spent several years touring with guitarist Mason Williams. During the 70s Rick made several session appearances, notably on John Stewart’s The Lonesome Picker Rides Again, . Cunha also enjoyed a fruitful association with Emmylou Harris). A recording contract with CBS Records ensued, but the label failed to release the album, which eventuallyappeared on an independent label , as Moving Pictures.

Intro: The special feature on this program is our tribute to Pete Seeger the banjo-picking troubadour who sang for migrant workers, college students and star-struck presidents in a career that introduced generations of Americans to their folk music heritage died Monday January 27th at the age of 94. Seeger‘s grandson, Kitama Cahill-Jackson, said his grandfather died peacefully in his sleep around 9:30 p.m. at New York Presbyterian Hospital, where he had been for six days. Family members were with him.”He was chopping wood 10 days ago,” Cahill-Jackson recalled. Pete was born May 3, 1919

We will start off the program with a concert that Pete performed at Hollywood High on June 5, 1960.

We will follow that with an interview recorded circa 1971 at Charles Seeger’s home in Santa Monica. The interview was conducted by Howard Larman. The background voices you hear are Pete’s wife Toshi talking to her father-in-law Charles.
